HELP!!! Bleed and Crop Boxes wrong for publication.

I am trying to set up bleed and crop marks for my publishers requirements in InDesign (and exporting them to PDF) but she was very vague on the instructions. She sent me an example:

228091_A4toA5_44_2016 Piano Concert_press_Page_1.jpg

I have fiddled with EVERYTHING, from the bleed marks, to the crop marks, the slug, the offset, but my document still appears slightly outside the bleed area. I want it to be slightly inside the bleed area like the above example. This is the best I can do:

test 1.jpg

How do I get my image to be slightly inside the bleed area? I tried minusing the offset but it starts at "0"

These are my current settings:

WIDTH 49p7.276 (AUS A4 size)

HEIGHT 70p1.89 (AUS A4 size)

Bleed: 0p5.669 As instructed by publisher. Left, Right, Top Bottom

Slug: 0. she didnt mention this

MY CURRENT EXPORT SETTINGS:

Untitled-3.jpg

I have tried everything I can and it is DRIVING ME INSANE, please help. The publisher offered to fix it for me for a fee, but its probably something simple and they charge enough already! I am obviously missing something simple or doing something wrong.

Re: Reading color values

Here is my take on an issue that has been around in video for ever.

Matching a printed page / photograph... is somewhat easier to do than matching an electronic display.

Simple reason. We see reflected light in life and anything printed .  Displays are not reflected light.

Achieving a match of a PMS color for example has never really been an exact science when CC and grading for a display.  PMS is printer reference and is of course - seen as reflected.

Compounded b the fact that lighting ...unless copy board FLAT...is never usually even across any subject. Therefore the lumas shift the color.  Maybe a catalogue will shoot for something like a perfect color match but rarely does film and video.  It would be a dull and flat video world if so.

Example ..We used to have clients tell us that Cadbury Dairy Milk pack, which they called Cadbury Blue and tried to trademark ...was PMS XYZ when we graded the pack shot.  We tried to demonstrate that PMS had no counterpart in our technology but usually ended up by asking them....what part of the pack would they like to see matched as close as possible to the PMS reference.

The client would hold the pack in the darkened grading suite up by the monitor until they were grudgingly satisfied we had come close.

Comparing apples to oranges.  Ha ha.

Re: Intent in Document Setup when converting Print edition to ePub

Hi,

You dont need to change the Intent in "Document Setup" from Print to Digital. Just right click in the rules and change the unit to pixels - in both rules (vert/horz). Changing the intent in most of the times change the page size and mess the layout.

Re: Import layer styles from Illustrator to AE

To go further, I finally found that this mechanism doesn't exist as seen here: Create and customize shapes and masks in After Effects

Hopefully Adobe gets to fix this at some point...

The following issues are known:

  • Not all features of Illustrator files are currently preserved. Examples include: opacity, images, and gradients.
  • Converted shapes ignore PAR overrides specified in the Interpret Footage dialog box.
  • Gradients and unsupported types may show as 50% gray shapes.
  • Files with thousands of paths may import very slowly without feedback.
  • The menu command works on a single selected layer at a time.
  • If you import an Illustrator file as a composition (i.e., several layers), you cannot convert all of those layers in one pass. However, you can import the file as footage, and then use the command to convert the single footage layer to shapes.

HELP! Can't see SNAPSHOT or other icons at bottom of panel

In my History/Actions and other panels, at the bottom should be icon - the column is so long I don't see them and I cannot figure out how to make the column shorter so they return ... any clue what's wrong and how to fix it? In the Layers/Styles/etc. panels, you can see the dark gray bottom of the box.  In the History column, it runs the entire length of my screen and I don't know how to shorten it (and I closed my dock and still can't see any icons). Thank you in advance!!!!Screen Shot 2017-01-10 at 7.55.09 PM.png

‘Your Computer is low on memory’.

After I’d recently resumed Video Editing [quite normally] for 3 days using Adobe Premier Elements 14.1 >  I began to receive this Error Message from Windows 10 Pro.  Windows is now soon spontaneously shutting down this program each time I try to do more Video Editing, making it unusable. Uninstalling/reinstalling the program did nothing to help.

My Computer had 8 Gb R.A.M and c half of my H.D.D is still vacant.

So far I’ve received no replies/responses at all to my 2 requests for help to tcssup@adobe.com  over the last 3 days.

In view of the good reputation of the Adobe brand, in good faith I purchased this product on Sat 28-11-15, and it initially functioned quite normally for a few months.

I’d greatly appreciate any suggestions which might help.

I am thinking that if you try to redefine the structure of a table, a screen reader will stumble hard on it, and someone required to hear the document read aloud will not easily grasp the structure concept.  I have had 508 coordinators reject anything that is not a standard, textbook-like table.  All that said, I will watch to see what others may think of this.

My best,

Just looking to see what has changed from 186 to 194 that stops flash based chats from connecting. When using 186 connection was fine. As soon as updated to 194 same chat gets a flash policy error even though flash policy is running. only thing to change was updating to the new flash player version. This is effecting both microsoft edge/ie and firefox. Not effecting google chrome as of yet as they haven't updated to the new version.

Re: Unable to drag files into Photoshop CC

I found the solution!

Photoshop must not be running as an administrator-- this is what causes the drag and drop problem. I knew this already, but I thought I'd checked all of my permissions settings. It turns out that the taskbar shortcut had its own permissions settings, separate of the settings for the .exe itself. While the .exe was not set to run as administrator, the taskbar shortcut was. So, opening PS from the .exe (or from the Creative Cloud launcher) worked, but opening it from the taskbar caused the issue. When I was checking permissions settings earlier, I only checked the settings in the Compatibility and Security tabs, and completely forgot about the shortcut itself having its own permissions.

So, solved!

Hi,

Selecting bleed on your output settings is correct, but Indesign won't generate the bleed for you. You have to make sure that you show the bleed area in your document (ie make sure you're not in preview mode). The bleed area shows as a red line outside the boundary of your page, and your image must be large enough to fill that area.

Sorry - just noticed that you don't have crop marks selected in your output dialog. The marks that you see are actually the bleed marks which are not necessary. Switch off bleed marks and switch on crop marks and you should be good to go.

Malcolm

I am so glad you clued me on this - I'm using it for other previously-annoying tasks as well. One problem is that occasionally I want to get something off the pasteboard that isn't accessible so long as I am in story editor. Is there a keyboard shortcut for toggling in and out of it?

Re: Reading color values

shooternz does a very good job of detailing the massive difference between video & stills.

I've been a pro portrait photographer nearly 40 years now. As is my wife. We were too darn picky for most of the pro portrait labs ... even the ones who built a rep on serving the "discriminating" portraitists ... to enjoy working with us, and vice versa. So we ended up running our own full color lab besides our studio, with staff hired to do the majority of the printing, and printed high-end portrait stuff for other photographers also.

Involved was all the calibration & systems testing to keep things tight and repeatable. Miriam and I trained our printers to do things that most pro labs said couldn't be done. We were both quite good at massive dodging/burning operations, sometimes taking a print with a "base" exposure of twenty seconds out to where it had over five minutes of total enlarger time by the end of the process, with three or four different color-settings in the head ... yea, we could do it.

Move forward into digital ... and I start adding a bit of video-post thinking that coming out of Lightroom & Photoshop, I had a pretty good idea of how to work with "images". It's just ... images, right, what's the difference?

As shooternz says, it's all the difference. I've some very good friends who are big-time pro colorists, one of whom just did a major series of commercials for Cadbury in England. I've been through demos by him on what they asked him to do, and what is actually do-able in video. And how he did it. So seeing shooternz reference them was fun.

This ain't Photoshop, this ain't stills work either photographic prints or CMYK press-runs. This is a completely different game. And in this game, if you don't know how to read the RGB Parade, various Waveform, and Vectorscope, well ... you're going to struggle.

And the Vectorscope YUV isn't a ancient holdover, but a very valuable tool. Wanna check your neutrals? Go to the center of the Vectorscope. They're either there ... or they're off, and exactly how far off is shown. You can watch it as you bring them back, far better than watching the program monitor.

And it's the only way to check for saturation issues ... and it is very easy to have overly saturated things that you have to bring back into acceptable or "legal" limits.

Re: Transferring ebooks to Kobo

I received a response from my library to try to deauthorize my computer and then reauthorize my pressing crtl+shift+d.  This gives me a screen to sign into and no matter how many times I change my password with adobe ID I get a message that says the password is incorrect and to try again.  Nothing is helping me fix this problem.

I'm disappointed in the lack of service help from Adobe, my library and Kobo.  No one can tell me why this is happening or how to fix it.  I get suggestions that don't work. And sometimes I can borrow a book and sometimes I can't and no one can tell me why that is either.  I am so beyond frustrated.
